About Me

Crossing the finish line 2011 Marine Corps Marathon

Hi!  I’m Helen and welcome to Running for HHT!  I started this blog a few years ago in part to reach new people, keep family and friends updated on my progress, and keep myself accountable.  But mostly I started this blog to help raise money for the HHT Foundation.  2012 didn’t quite go according to plan but I’m still running, still strength training, and still working on breaking into the triathlon world.

A Little About Me

I’m not a personal trainer or fitness instructor, just someone who loves fitness and hopes to inspire others to share that same passion.  All through middle school, high school, and college I was a thrower on the Track & Field team.  I still hold my College’s discus record, but in the “real” world there are so many more running opportunities than discus opportunities, so two years ago I made the switch to running.  I still miss being a thrower and the camaraderie I had with my teammates, but maybe someday I’ll pick it back up.

Since becoming a runner, I’ve completed races of all distances from 5Ks to the Marathon.   I’ve also completed P90X, Insanity, and Insanity – The Asylum.  My current go to workout is CrossFit but without a local affiliate, my crossfit workouts are few and far between.  I love finding new fitness ideas and try to stay well rounded in my daily workouts.

Why Running for HHT

I ran my first 5K in Sept 2010 and the Marine Corps Marathon a year later.  As my 2012 New Year’s resolution I thought I should have a big goal.  Knowing people with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) or Osler-Weber-Rendu, I’ve seen firsthand how living with HHT can affect everyday life.  HHT is a genetic disorder of the blood vessels, which affects ~1 in 5,000.

For 2012 I decided to use my running not only for myself, but to raise money for the HHT Foundation.
